Features of places: Weather

Geography

About this program

In this program students examine factors that change the weather. They use maps to navigate their way around the school grounds to look at the temperature in different places. They construct their own weather instrument to measure the wind in different places and read a book that looks at how one animal uses the different weather conditions around the world.

Activities

Using a map. Students are taught to read a map so that they can find the thermometers that are placed in different areas around Thalgarrah EEC and record. Students discuss factors that made the temperatures different in each place.

Wind machine. With a partner, students will construct a simple wind machine. They will then test the wind in different places in the playground and record. Students discuss factors that made the wind speed different in each place. Consider the implications of this on the farm that surrounds Thalgarrah EEC.

The Circle. Read the story "The Circle" to students, stopping to show on the world map where the bird is at various stages throughout the book.

Animal encounters. Look at various captive animals (eg. reptiles and insects) and consider how these animals respond to changes in weather. How does this affect how we look after them?
