About this program
What is a river like is a Stage 1 HSIE Geography excursion where students investigate the natural and human features of the Gara river at Thalgarrah EEC and surrounding farmland.
Students use maps, observations and hands-on fieldwork to explore the river environment. They investigate how people use, value and care for water environments.
Learning intentions

Activities
Features of a river: Students follow a map to find a good vantage point above the river. Using binoculars they study the natural and human features around the river. They create a field sketch from this vantage point.
Invertebrates in the river: Students collect invertebrates in the river and learn about the needs of the invertebrates and how they help the river.
Map making: Based on an aerial photograph, students collaboratively build a temporary map of the area around Thalgarrah EEC including the Gara river using loose natural materials to represent key features.
