Scientist for a day - Stage 2
About this program
What do 'Scientists' do? Students have an opportunity to meet and hear from a scientist who will explain their area of scientific research. Students will get opportunities to create and conduct scientific investigations around energy and communicate their results with their peers.
Activities
Meet a Scientist: A visiting scientist will talk with students about their work as a scientist and how they got into their chosen field. Students will take part in an activity within the topic that the scientist is studying.
Teacup investigation: Using scientific equipment and a fair test, students will investigate which cup is best at keeping their warm cup of "tea" warmer for longer.
Save our soils investigation: In small groups, students will try to prevent or reduce soil erosion by covering it with natural materials.
Important information
Outcomes:
* uses information to investigate the solar system and the effects of energy on living, physical and geological systems ST2-SCI-01
* poses questions to create fair tests that investigate the effects of energy on living things and physical systems ST2-PQU-01
* uses and interprets data to describe patterns and relationships ST2-DAT-01
Content:
Heat energy can be transferred
* Recognise that heat energy can be transferred from warmer to cooler objects by conduction, convection and radiation
* Recognise that temperature is a measure of hotness or coldness, measured using a thermometer and often expressed in degrees Celsius
* Pose questions and conduct fair tests to compare how different materials absorb or reflect heat energy
* Describe how the properties of materials and transfer of heat energy impact everyday life
Forces shape Earth’s surface
* Describe and model how forces produced by moving water cause erosion
